]]>The post Challenging Traditional Education Models – SteveJobsSchools launch in South Africa appeared first on EducationWeek.co.za / EduWeek with SABC Education.
]]>With traditional school curricula inclined to prioritize the accumulation of knowledge over the application of knowledge, many schooling systems fail to adequately train students in digital citizenship and digital literacy. SteveJobsSchools aim to revolutionize the traditional method of classroom teaching through leveraging the latest technology and giving students the freedom to learn at their own pace through an Independent Learning Plan (ILP).
As a parent seeking the best for his child, Maurice started the Schools after he discovered that when researching suitable schools for his youngest daughter, that even though the world has changed immensely, most schools still use the same model and methods as 50 years ago. This model, designed for the industrial era, will fail to prepare learners adequately for the future world, essentially equipping learners to ‘fight tomorrows wars with yesterday’s weapons’
SJS engages the latest technologies in education and learning to equip students with the skills they will need to thrive in 2020 and beyond. The SJS concept is based on the drivers of Choice, Collaboration, and Challenge, with the curriculum aimed to develop relevant competencies, connections and contributions for the changing world we live in.
Maurice de Hond comments, “The SteveJobsSchool concept is a truly holistic, three-dimensional and relevant education system for the 21st century – epitomizing the School of the Future. Technology offers a variety of learning opportunities beyond the physical limits of school, while flexible, open learning environments enable contextual, real-time, interactive and personalized learning.”
Maurice explains that in a SJS classroom, students use technology, apps and iPads to take a more active role in personalizing their own education, while teachers adopt new roles as coaches and facilitators of knowledge rather than knowledge transmitters. Areas of focus include maths, science, technology, engineering, entrepreneurship, creativity and problem solving.
“Technology can transform education by extending the learning space beyond the four walls of a classroom. The SteveJobsSchool teachers call their school a 24/7 school as it is always available. At the administrative level, our technology makes education systems more efficient by helping teachers and administrators streamline routine tasks and improve assessment and data collection,” says Maurice.
SJS believes that with using technology and the internet, that the cost of education can be driven down substantially. “SJS has implemented a system that has the potential to transform education and effectively integrate technology into the classroom, igniting student engagement. We’re thrilled to be bringing this revolution in education to South Africa,” he adds.

]]>The post SaveTNet Cyber Safety Panel adding value at EduWeek appeared first on EducationWeek.co.za / EduWeek with SABC Education.
]]>The aim is to equip teachers and ensure that they know how to protect themselves and their learners from the dangers of cyberspace. SaveTNet creates awareness for responsible digital engagement and offers help to schools and victims of cyber related cases.
“Teachers and school governing bodies are faced with tough decisions and difficult social media related cases and they don’t necessarily have the needed skills to deal with it appropriately. SaveTNet wants to give EduWeek visitors access to a panel of experts to share essential information and to help both teachers and learners to be more cyber savvy,” says Rianette Leibowitz from SaveTNet Cyber Safety.
How to deal with cyberbullying, inappropriate images and when it is necessary to consult with a forensic analyst will be discussed. FEDSAS (The Federation of South Africa School Governing Bodies) will share how they support their members and the latest updates from the South African Law Reform Commission will be addressed as well. Additionally, the panel will look at the role that mobile operators play and how they can assist with cyber-related incidents.
“In order for us to protect and educate the youth, we need teachers and parents to know all about it themselves,” says Leibowitz.
To ensure ongoing support, SaveTNet is offering a Cyber Safety Task Team that schools and governing bodies can turn to in times of digital distress.
It is imperative that learners, parents and teachers are aware of both the advantages and disadvantages of the online space. Speaking at the Career Indaba held at the Sandton Convention Centre earlier this year, Leibowitz also stressed the importance of creating a positive digital footprint.
“At SaveTNet, we define your digital footprint as everything that has your fingerprint linked to it. Your digital identity is everywhere – searches, emails, posts, tweets, likes and shares. Everything done online can be found, shared, copied and broadcast, so we need to ensure that it is positive and true,” she says.
SaveTNet came about in response to the terrifying statistics of young people taking their lives due to cyberbullying and the prevalence of violence on the net. SaveTNet saw a real need to educate people on the dangers while appreciating the immense value of cyberspace: “Many parents today did not grow up with social media and the challenges it creates. They therefore do not know how to deal with this ever-changing situation. This affords us the opportunity to create concious mindsets to focus on responsible engagement and content creation by influencing society and the companies that create these remarkable platforms,” she says.
Registration is free www.theeducationweek.org and the SaveTNet Cyber Safety Panel will be on stage on 30 June between 11:00 and 12:00 on the Basic Education Programme.

]]>Pearson Southern Africa operates in 11 countries in sub-Saharan Africa (we publish in over 58 African languages), combining extensive local knowledge with global expertise and resources to give Southern African education the best possible products and services.
We are partners to ministries of education, students, parents and teachers and offer learning resources from early childhood development to formal schooling to vocational academic and further education.
As a company that is committed to improving the lives of learners through a global pledge to education, we:
Through the Pearson Marang Educational Trust we have managed to improve the results of some of the poorest performing schools in the country. We believe this proves that change can happen and that public/private partnerships have a major role to play in the transformation of education in Southern Africa.
We believe we have a vital and active role to play in continuing to find solutions to our education problems.
Pearson remains the world’s leading learning company.
Pearson supports the schools, TVET colleges and Higher Education institutions across the entire Southern Africa. 4 of the most exciting projects we are busy with at the moment include:
Every organisation (profit and non-profit) attempts to differentiate themselves somehow. Ours is very simple – our products and services help improve the lives of our learners from at any age – from school all the way to tertiary and even thereafter – Pearson will be by your side.
There are a couple, but the one that is starting to become a real challenge is the attempt by various provinces and/or schools to take on the digital journey. It’s something that needs to be seen as a journey and not a once-off project. eLearning is not just about the devices, but it’s about empowering the teachers to be able to take on the new challenges of digital.
Our solutions are based on longer term support and facilitation vs just a once off intervention. An analogy is the personal trainer at the gym – this person supports you over a period of time and prepares you for the race/competition in future.
A couple of things:
But most importantly – engaging with the delegates and constantly learning from them; their challenges and how we could make a difference in their and their learners lives.

]]>EduWeek with SABC Education powered by Intel is a free-to-attend education event which takes place on the 29th and 30th June at the Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand. Recognised as the most comprehensive education event in Sub-Saharan Africa, visitors to this year’s EduWeek conference can look forward to a series of free workshops focused on providing free educational training and development for teachers and educators, as well as one-on-one interaction at the various exhibitor stands.
The theme for EduWeek with SABC Education powered by Intel for 2016 is Sustainable Development in Education. Education for Sustainable Development is focused on allowing every human being to acquire the knowledge, skills, attitudes and values necessary to shape a sustainable future and one cannot mention the future without talking about technology. Technology’s role in education is undisputed — it is certainly viewed as an effective means to enable both student and teacher in creating a more engaging learning environment. For many educational institutions though, the question remains how to efficiently use the technology resources available to them. In South Africa currently, where improving education is a nationwide concern, the role of technology is not just a luxury, but perhaps a much-needed solution.
EduWeek sees the role of technology in Education as a critical one and it is the aim of the event to ensure that technology is being integrated into the curriculum delivery process. The role of the teacher and the lecturer is at the heart of successful use of technology and that is why technology has become a focus on the event’s calendar to aid educators in understanding how best to integrate this tool into the classroom, now and into the future.
Leading Education technology provider Intel has once again partnered with EduWeek as the headline sponsor of the event and will showcase its latest developments in innovation, security and technology for inclusive education. The E-Tech Theatre will host Intel’s workshop titled, ‘Looking at the African Classroom of the Future’ where they will explore what the African Classroom of the future will look and the technologies that will be interacted with.
EduWeek are proud to announce Microsoft as Diamond partner this year. Visitors to the Microsoft stand will experience a deep-dive into the complete Microsoft in Education ecosystem. From Minecraft and Xbox through coding, the latest Windows devices and Office 365 as well as previews of exciting new developments such as Microsoft Classroom and OneNote. There will be a live classroom demo theatre where our team will be showing off many of these tools and demo’ing just how great they are to use in the classroom. “The success of the digital transition of education depends on more than devices and connectivity,” says Claudia Johnston Education Sector Lead at Microsoft South Africa. “It also requires that learners have access to tools and creative content to get the most out of their lessons while teachers have the support they need to make classes and sessions more memorable, interactive, and relevant for their learners. Doing so will allow Microsoft to play a key role in imparting the youth of today with the hard and soft skillsets they require to be successful in the workplaces and boardrooms of tomorrow. However, this depends on these learners having well-trained teachers equipped with the right skills to make learning relevant and contextual for the youngsters they are teaching. Teachers are the single most important factor in better education outcomes and at Microsoft, we recognise and support this with our work across the country – hence our participation in EduWeek 2016.” Angela Schaerer (Teacher Engagement Manager, Microsoft South Africa) will also be chairing a panel discussion around whether technology will save our schools.
Dell are also welcomed to EduWeek this year as a Gold Partner. Said Ravi Govender, Education Lead for Dell South Africa, “For Dell, the most important enabler of human potential is technology. We want to address how important is to invest in purpose built technology for education and how Dell is positioned to do this. We see our role as helping Education institutions to drive learning through technology in the classroom. Part of this also falls into our future ready vision of bringing technology today which can cater for changes that are coming within the learning spectrum of the future.”
EduWeek has established a powerful reputation in the industry, especially within the realm of digital technology. As a result, the largest quantity of quality leading-edge digital and technology brands such as Intel, Microsoft, Dell, Samsung, Positivo and Vastratech This means that any African professional with a vested interest to see, try and buy educational technology would be at a serious disadvantage if they did not attend this year’s event.
Additional topics on the agenda for day one of E-Tech include data, gaming in the classroom and how to improve your school’s maths and science results tomorrow. Day two of the free sessions cover such topics as implementing a successful E-Learning solution, iPad fundamentals for Teachers, Mastering the Techno Life Balance, Robots and Maths, Get the Spark Back in Your School, Virtual Reality and mobile technology learning. For detailed information on the free workshops and speakers, visit: http://www.theeducationweek.org/e-tech-programme/
EduWeek is where public and private stakeholders can gather to discuss future solutions and critical issues surrounding the education sector in Africa as well as evaluate, see and buy new solutions for their education institution’s needs. Says Tanya Jackman, Event Director of EduWeek, “ EduWeek’s vision is for all educators to have access to free hands-on training & practical advice as well as direct access to the leading solution providers. Understanding the future of education and the role technology will play in this is critical and the E-Tech Theatre sessions will go a long way to informing, inspiring and dispelling fears.”
Being a free to attend event means that EduWeek can only be made possible by the incredible sponsors and partners that come together in support of this annual educational indaba, these partners include: Headline Partner, Intel; Diamond Sponsor Microsoft; Platinum Sponsor, Pearson and Gold Sponsor, Dell.

]]>The post We Need Language-Based Literacy Intervention appeared first on EducationWeek.co.za / EduWeek with SABC Education.
]]>Children are not born with a brain that has specialised areas for reading because reading is a recent human development. To learn how to read we need to use the existing neural systems for spoken language. Both spoken language and plenty of guided practice are essential ingredients for reading development. We use brain areas for phonology (process speech sounds), semantics (attach meaning to words) and syntax (understand the sentence structure in our language). These areas of spoken language, as well as visual, memory and attention systems are all key for reading development. If children have a strong spoken language base, and get a good phonics-language based instruction with lots of practice, most become fluent readers with good comprehension by the end of the foundation phase.
Students who learn to read in a second or third language, need to work extra hard to transfer mother-tongue oral language skills to the reading process. This process requires explicit teaching of the letter-sound correspondences, the meaning of words and specific sentence structures in the new language. This takes time. Teachers beyond the foundation phase seldom have the time or expertise to help children learn to read. They need to teach the syllabus. As a result many of these children fall further behind in academic success due to weak reading.
The dyslexic reader or those with specific language learning impairments have similar challenges. Their spoken language circuitry does not easily support reading development so they require enormous amounts of target specific language based literacy instruction.
The Virtual Reading Gym™ (VRG) was born out of the desire to share the learning and success at the Reading Language Gym which is a private clinic in Cape Town run by Speech-language therapists. The VRG™ is an online, target specific, language-based remedial reading intervention for the delayed older reader. The VRG is for any age reader who has a basic grade 2 or above reading ability. It is set against an exciting game and is tailored to the reader’s own errors and has a reward system. It aims to guide a reading partner to read with the delayed older reader. The use of the VRG™ with peer mentors at schools is under Research with the University of Cape Town. We look forward to launching The VRG within the second half of 2016.
